Cinnamon cultivation and processing have been one of
the oldest industries in Sri Lanka (Ceylon). Ceylon Cinnamon industry is well-protected and even at present,
traditional minds and methods drive the Ceylon Cinnamon industry in the island. Even though cinnamon
cultivation has already spread into many provinces in Sri
Lanka, the processing of Cinnamon and the focal points
of business is mainly located in the southern part of the
island. Therefore, the vast majority of cinnamon farmers
in the Sabaragamuwa province struggle not only to
process their crops but also to obtain a fair price for their
harvest.
We, at VTS Agroventures Pvt. Ltd. strongly believe that
Ceylon True Cinnamon is a gift to the world and as Sri
Lankans it is our duty to make efforts to uplift the Ceylon
Cinnamon Industry and to ensure ethical, fair and
sustainable business practices in doing so. Therefore, we
have established our first Cinnamon processing facility
in the Sabaragamuwa Province at Arangala Kanda,
Koskolawatta, Ambepussa, a land which had been
mainly focused on rubber cultivation for decades, now
slowly diverting towards Cinnamon cultivation.
As one of the first initiatives for a sustainable business,
we have exposed the unskilled rural community of the
local villages to the first employment opportunities of
cinnamon processing in the region. We have also taken a
pledge on women empowerment and as its first steps,
we have shifted the gender ratio of the total workforce
for over 80% towards women.
We, as VTS Agroventures Pvt. Ltd. are proud for being
able to create direct and indirect income streams in the
area and thereby increase the economic activities and to
uplift the living standards of an entire community as a
whole.
